After visiting Weirs Beach, New Hampshire for a wedding a few years ago, we couldn’t wait to return for another visit. We spent one night here on our trip home from Maine to Pennsylvania in late August.
This is a family friendly town with lots of activities to keep everyone happy. We stayed in a cottage at Grandview Hotel and Cottages during both our stays in New Hampshire. We were very happy with the cozy cottage, which is a one room affair with a shower, toilet and sink. Our cottage had two double beds, a futon sofa and plenty of floor space for a pack and play or sleeping bag or two. There was a small refrigerator, enough to store drinks and snacks for the night and bedding and towels were provided. Something to note is that the Grandview is located close to a road and if the sound of passing cars might keep you awake, you may want to stay elsewhere. This was not deterrent for us and we would stay here again, but lighter sleepers might take issue with this. The cottages are less than a ten minute drive to the lake.
A perk of staying at the Grandview is the candy/ice cream shop next door. Walk across a small bridge at the edge of the lawn and arrive at the Kellerhaus. The Kellerhaus makes its own chocolate on site and offers an ice cream bar and breakfast on the weekends. It also houses a large gift shop filled with a variety of gifts, toys, ornaments and more.
Also close to the Grandview is some of the most affordable fun we have ever come across. The Funspot claims to be the largest arcade in the world and offers arcade games, kiddie rides (think grocery store coin operated carousel), bowling, mini golf, bingo and a tavern. There is a coupon for 50 free tokens available on the website. If you have young enough children, you can spend $20 and get enough tokens for three kids to play games until they drop from exhaustion.
The town of Weirs Beach has much to offer in the way of family entertainment and we only scratched the surface of what is available. The focal point of the town is Lake Winnipesauke. We walked along the walkway that follows the train tracks and offers views of the lake and landed at the beach. The beach was busy, but not so much that space couldn’t be found. On the day we visited, we were able to watch countless boats going in and out of the channel. There were restrooms and changing facilities available at the beach as well.
The town has a sea side feel with boardwalk style pizza places and arcade games. There are also stand alone restaurants, some of which offer lake views. There is mini golf, a water park and a drive in movie theater.
On a previous trip, we also took a train ride through the area with http://www.hoborr.com/winni.html . It was a scenic ride and some food was available for those who wanted lunch while they rode.
My favorite part of this trip was the hour before checkout the morning we left. We took a quick drive to the lake and let the kids run in. We were the only ones on the beach at around 9am on Sunday. The water was crystal clear and the temperature was perfect. It was an ideal way to spend the last few minutes of our trip.
Weirs Beach is a great place to visit for the day or for much longer. It is definitely on our list of places to return to again.
